Zero entered mathematics twice: first as a placeholder marking an empty column in Babylonian records, and much later, in India, as a symbol in its own right that could be added, multiplied and reasoned about. That second step was the harder one, because it required treating nothing as something. European merchants adopted the digit centuries afterwards, over the objection of authorities who considered the new numerals easier to copy than Roman ones.
