Two mechanisms drive the movement: the ice itself deforms under its own pressure, and the whole mass can slide on a thin film of meltwater at its surface. Speeds vary enormously — from a few metres a year to several metres a week during a surge — and the fastest glaciers today are those whose bases are lubricated by increasing meltwater.
