Tea reached Europe in the early seventeenth century, carried by Dutch merchants. At first it was a luxury, drunk mainly by the wealthy, and doctors argued about whether it was a remedy or a poison. Prices fell as imports grew, and within a decade tea had become the everyday drink of ordinary households across Britain.
